Chapter 11

CHEWING ANOTHER BITE of her protein bar, Madeline gazed around the room. She didn’t recognize anyone here, but that wasn’t too surprising. They’d told her that only essential employees had been asked to remain while she and the SEALs were here. Now that she was in the basement, she felt safe for the moment. Rushing down the stairs with the alarm sounding had been overwhelming. She’d felt so damn helpless, like she was about to be swept right back up by the evil men who’d taken her.

Shifting slightly, she adjusted her position against the wall. Brian and Havoc had moved her to the corner, which she appreciated. Part of her felt embarrassed for crying all over him, but he hadn’t seemed fazed by it in the slightest. She was only inches away from him now, his arm brushing against hers for a brief moment as he took a swig of water.

“Are you okay sitting here?” he asked.

“Yeah. I kind of like being away from the others. It’s better than sitting on the ground in the cave at any rate.”

Brian bit out a curse. “Sorry. We can move a chair over. I didn’t think that it would remind you—”

“I’m fine,” she said, grabbing his forearm before he stood. His gaze locked with hers for a moment, and she was shocked at the chemistry she felt between them. Quickly pulling her hand back, she felt herself flushing. They were locked down in a basement for goodness’s sake. She hadn’t even touched Brian’s bare skin, just the camo fatigues he had on. That didn’t stop her from noticing the way his muscled forearm felt beneath her touch. He was rock solid.

He looked affected himself for an instant, then recovered. As he shifted slightly, adjusting his rifle, she noticed the veins on his big hands and how thick his fingers were. Brian was all male. “Okay,” he said in a low voice. “Let me know if you change your mind, and I’ll grab a chair for you to sit on instead.”

A new person walked into the room, and she realized it was the man they’d seen upstairs. He was speaking with some of the employees huddled away from them, looking grim. Brian’s hand suddenly went to his headset as he stiffened.

A gasp came from the other side of the room, and Madeline looked back and forth in confusion.

“Roger that,” Havoc said into his mic, listening to whatever update they’d just received. His jaw was clenched, his fist tightening.

“What’s going on?” she asked.

Havoc exchanged a glance with Brian before answering. “They found Joe Larson’s identification card.”

“Here?”

“Near the vehicle that had the car bomb.”

“Oh my God,” she gasped. “Was he there? Was he in the car?”

“We don’t know,” Brian said quietly. “They could’ve taken his ID and dropped it as they ran in. A card like that wouldn’t survive an explosion. Maybe someone had it and hoped to access the embassy compound, although they wouldn’t have gotten far. Whether he was with them willingly or not remains to be seen.
